A Stevens Point man will spend time in prison following sentencing Wednesday on an arson conviction in Portage County Court. 62 year old Gary McDonald in May entered no contest pleas to the arson charge, along with two counts of first degree recklessly endangering safety. McDonald admitted to setting multiple fires inside a Stevens Point home in the early morning hours of August 24th of 2018. In one of the fires he used gasoline to set a bed ablaze, with two people sleeping at the time. The four occupants of the home were able to extinguish the fires before fire crews arrived. Only minor injuries resulted from the fires. In court yesterday, McDonald was ordered to serve two years in prison, plus five years on extended supervision following his release. A charge of attempted homicide was dismissed in the case, but read in for Wednesday’s sentencing.
