The candidates for the 14th State Senate District, and the 40th State Assembly District met for a candidate forum in Waupaca last night. Questions dealt with issues like the state’s transportation needs, transparency in government, education funding, and high capacity wells. In the 14th Senate District, Democratic challenger Brian Smith, the mayor of Waupaca, is hoping to unseat Republican Luther Olson. Smith says its time to put government back in the hands of local control. Olson, seeking his 4th term in the senate, says the state needs to increase user fees, like the gas tax, to keep up with road repairs. In the 40th Assembly District, incumbent Republican Kevin Peterson says making sure businesses have skilled workers is a priority. Democratic challenger Dmitri Martin says people he’s talked to have disengaged with the political process. The election is next Tuesday.
