The city of Waupaca is about to become the new owner of Haberkorn Field. The common council last night voted to approve the purchase of the 8-acre property from the Waupaca School District for 155-thousand dollars. The former Comet football field is being eyed as the potential site for a new city public works facility.
The property is located between Lakeman Field and the city’s Water Department garage, with both properties owned by the city. Public Works Director Justin Berrens says construction of a new public works facility could occur between 2023 and 2025, depending on budgets and capital. The project has been on the city’s radar since a facilities study in 1999. The council last night also approved an upgrade in bandwidth for Waupaca Online, and a new pricing structure for the internet provider. New rural customers that will get the service thanks to an expansion grant the city received earlier this year will pay 5-dollars per month more, to help offset tower lease costs. The expansion grant is helping expand Waupaca Online into rural Manawa and Fremont, among other areas.
