The Waupaca Comet baseball team is heading to state. The Comets knocked off Valders in a sectional semi-final Tuesday 8-2, then went on to beat Oconto Falls 8-3 in the sectional final to earn their first state tournament trip since 1969. Waupaca pounded out double-digit hit totals in each game, with Jason Ellie getting the game-one win on the mound to go to 7-1 on the season. Walker Smith got the sectional championship win to improve his mark to 8-0. Comet coach John Koronkiewicz has taken 5 football teams to the state championships, but this is his first baseball team to make it to state in his 24 years of leading the team. And this is his final year as head coach, as he has announced his retirement from teaching and coaching in the Waupaca district. Waupaca will play West Salem in a state semi-final at Fox Cities Stadium next Wednesday evening, with the gametime approximately 8:15. If you can’t make it to the game, you can hear it on FM 92.7 WDUX.
