A Waupaca County Sheriff’s Deputy was awarded a letter of commendation this morning for his heroics in helping save the life of a fire victim last October. 10-year veteran officer Matt Whitaker responded to the fire scene in downtown Clintonville on October 19th, where an upstairs apartment was fully engulfed. He and Clintonvile police officer found an unconscious male lying in the doorway of the engulfed apartment. They scaled an outside stairway which was involved with heavy heat and smoke, and removed the man, and began c-p-r. They were able to restart the man’s heartbeat, and get him breathing again, saving his life. It wasn’t until after the heroic actions that Officer Whitaker noticed his duty belt had been partially melted in the heat of the fire. The letter of commendation was presented to Officer Whitaker during this morning’s meeting of the Waupaca County Board of Supervisors.
