A Reedsville man remains in a Marshfield hospital following Monday’s head-on crash on US Highway 10 near Custer. Portage County Sheriff’s officials say 20 year-old Joseph Krizek was eastbound on 10 when his car crossed through the median and smashed into a semi driven by 56 year-old Joe Hannah of Fond du Lac.
Krizek was trapped in his car, which started on fire. An off-duty Waupaca County Sheriff’s Deputy used a portable fire extinguisher to put out the fire. Emergency crews then extricated Krizek, who was then taken to a Stevens Point hospital, and later transferred to Marshfield.
Hannah was treated and released at St. Michael’s in Point. Authorities say excessive speed and wet roadway conditions were factors in the crash. Highway 10 was detoured in that area for over five hours while officials investigated the accident.
