The Waupaca Area Fire Department now has more tools to help save pets who otherwise might die from smoke from a fire. The department recently received a donation of pet oxygen masks from the Invisible Fence’s Project Breathe Program . In addition to that, the department also received a donation of an oxygen cylinder and regulator system from the Gold Cross Ambulance Service that serves the Waupaca area. The masks can be used on pets ranging from cats and dogs, to rabbits and hamsters. Its estimated that each year, more than 40-thousand pets die in fires, most due to smoke inhalation. Since Project Breathe’s inception in 2006, 24-thousand masks have been donated to first responders nationally, and nearly 200 animal lives have been saved.
