A home in Waupaca was destroyed by fire late Saturday morning. According to Fire Chief Jerry Deuman, crews were called to 1002 7th Street just after 11 a.m., and found smoke and flames coming from a back bedroom. Several other area fire departments responded to assist. A fire crew from Weyauwega worked to get into the basement, but while they were in there the fire flashed over, and they became disoriented. Deuman says another crew went in to help them get out safely. Following that, crews set up a defensive attack against the blaze, and eventually called in a back-hoe to help bring the structure down. There were no injuries, and damage was estimated in the 175-thousand dollar range. No cause of the fire has yet been determined.
