Participation in high school sports across the country is down for the first time in 30 years. According to the National Federation of State High School Associations, their annual survey for the 2018-2019 school year showed 7,937,491 participants in high school sports, a decline of 43,400. The largest declines in participation are being seen in the sports of football and basketball. The number of players nationwide in 11-man football declined by nearly 31,000, while participation in boys and girls basketball was down by nearly 24,000. The sports of soccer, track and field, and wrestling did show increases from the previous year.
