Waupaca firefighters evacuated 28 homes on the city’s southeast side due to a gas leak Thursday morning. According to Fire Captain Jake Waller, crews were called to the 9th and Demerest Street area just before 7:30, and found a strong smell of natural gas coming from a storm sewer. Crews evacuated all residents on 9th Street between Park Avenue and Columbia Street, along with Demerest Street between 10th and 8th Streets. WE Energies workers found the underground leak in the front yard of a home on 9th Street. WE Energies then dug a trench to repair the problem, and residents were escorted back into their homes, with WE Energies officials checking every home for gas levels. Waupaca fire personnel were on that scene for about 3 hours.
