A horse in Waupaca County has tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis. The virus that causes the disease is transmitted by infected mosquitos, who pick up the virus by feeding on infected birds. Humans can become infected through mosquito bites, but no human infections have been reported in the state since 2011. The Waupaca County Health Department urges residents to take precautions to protect against mosquito bites, such as putting on repellant, and getting rid of any standing water. The infected horse in Waupaca County has died.
