An Iola man is facing felony charges following serious injuries to an Iola woman believed to have been caused by the man’s dog. 42 year-old Jeffrey C. Pruess is charged with second degree recklessly endangering safety and causing injury by negligent use of a weapon. The criminal complaint says Pruess is the owner of a dog that allegedly attacked the woman outside Pruess’s home in early January. The complaint alleges the animal got the woman on the ground, holding her left arm in its mouth, then twisting and throwing her around as what the complaint describes “like a rag doll.”
Pruess, who was allegedly intoxicated at the time is alleged to have watched the attack from inside his home, then went to sleep on a sofa. The complaint says the woman suffered a broken left forearm, a compound break to her upper left arm, and a break in her right arm as well, along with multiple bite wounds. The complaint also says the dog has biting incidents on record from the fall of 2013 and spring of 2014.
If convicted of the charges, Pruess could face up to 13 years in prison. He makes his initial court appearance on March 22.
