A Marion man was placed on one year probation during sentencing in Waupaca County Circuit Court in a pipe-bomb explosion case. 60 year old Scott Mattes of Marion entered guilty pleas to counts of endangering safety by use of a dangerous and disorderly conduct, with the more serious charge of homicide by negligent handling of an explosive dismissed in the plea agreement. Mattes is the second person involved in the case given a sentence of probation. Kenneth Niemer was given a similar sentence early last week. The final defendent in the case, Robert Mattes of New London, will enter a plea November 11th. The three were with Paul Casperson at a Town of DuPont property in May attempting to explode a 4-inch pipe, when shrapnel from then pipe struck Casperson, killing him.
