Officials in Portage County want to hear what residents think about implementing a wheel tax in the county. A public informational meeting is being held Monday, November 12th, at 3:30 in Conference Room 1 and 2 of the Portage County Annex, located at 1462 Strongs Avenue in Stevens Point. There will be a brief presentation, to be followed by a question and answer period. The Portage County Board of Supervisors will then consider the vehicle registration fee proposal at its meeting on the 20th. The proposal has already been recommended, at 25-dollars per eligible vehicle, by the county’s highway and finance committees. It would generate about 1.4 million dollars per year, to be used exclusively for transportation purposes. Several municipalities around the state have recently implemented a “wheel tax”, including Eau Claire County this summer, and the city of New London earlier this year.
