A Marion man will serve 6 years in prison for choking a Shawano County sheriff’s deputy to unconsciousness.
46 year old Chad Kohel was sentenced this week in Shawano County Circuit Court on convictions of battery to a law enforcement officer, strangulation and suffocation, and 3rd offense drunk driving. Kohel was also sentenced to six years on extended supervision and ordered to pay fines. Kohel was stopped for drunk driving in July 2018.
A preliminary breath test showed Kohel was over three times the legal limit to drive in Wisconsin. After a blood draw at Shawano Hospital, the deputy was attempting to transport Kohel back to the jail when he grabbed her around the neck and choked her to unconsciousness. Her body camera showed the attack by Kohel in the back of a squad car. When she came to, the deputy was able to grab her taser and hold Kohel on the ground until other officers arrived.
