A Portage County jury returned a guilty verdict Tuesday against a Bancroft man on a charge of homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle. 59 year old Scott Sawyer was the driver of a car that went out of control after doing burn-outs on County Hiway “W” in April of 2015. 52 year old Gregory Turner of Bancroft, who was a passenger in the car, was killed in the crash. Prosecutors say Sawyer modified the 2014 Ford Mustang, eliminating some safety features like traction control, that would have helped keep the car under control. The jury acquitted Sawyer of a more serious charge of 2nd degree reckless homicide. He faces up to 10 years in prison when sentenced March 22nd.
