Wisconsin Public Service is warning area businesses of a new phone scam making the rounds. Since Saturday, more than a dozen calls have been made to restaurants, and other businesses, in Waupaca, Stevens Point, Green Bay, and DePere. The caller is impersonating a WPS employee, saying the business owes the utility money, and if they don’t pay immediately, their power will be shut off. WPS says in two cases, businesses fell victim to the scam, and sent hundreds of dollars. The utility says they would never ask customers to pay bills with prepaid credit cards, and would never seek payment in a threatening manner. WPS also reminds customers never to give out banking or account information over the phone.
