A rural Ogdensburg man is facing a felony charge in Waupaca County Circuit Court for burning down an old house. 47 year old Jery L. Schmidt is charged with unsafe burning of his own building, a charge that carries up to 6 years in prison and 10-thousand dollars in fines upon conviction. The criminal complaint alleges Schmidt called into the Waupaca County Sheriff’s Office in early March, telling them he would be having a controlled burn. A passing off-duty DNR warden saw the house on fire at night and called it in. Sheriff’s deputies on the scene called for Waupaca and Weyauwega Fire Departments to respond, because of the danger to nearby outbuildings, large trees, and utility poles. The complaint says one pole started smoldering due to the heat, so Wisconsin Public Service was called in to shut off the power. Schmidt makes his initial appearance on the charge April 24th.
