A man riding his snowmobile on the Wolf River south of New London had to be rescued late Friday night after his snowmobile went down in open water. According to the Waupaca County Sheriff”s Office, the snowmobile entered open water south of County Highway “X” just after 11:30 pm. Authorities say the man was heading south on the river on his own when he hit the open water. He was able to call 9-1-1, and give officers information on his location. When deputies got to the scene, they found the caller in open water hanging on to the edge of the ice near where his snowmobile went down. New London Fire Department personnel were able to get the man to shore, where he was loaded in an ambulance and taken to ThedaCare–New London Hospital. From there he was flown to Theda Care Medical Center of Neenah. The Wisconsin DNR is investigating the incident.
