Three area men have now been charged in connection with the explosion death near Marion last Sunday evening. 42 year old Kenneth Niemer of Clintonville, 37 year old Robert Mattes of New London, and 60 year old Scott Mattes of Marion each face a felony count of homicide by negligent handling of explosives, as a party to a crime. The complaint says the three were attempting to detonate some gun powder in a 4-foot long steel pipe that had one end welded shut. Their first attempt failed, so, according to the complaint, one of the men stuffed paper towels into the pipe, and dropped in an aerosol can of WD-40. The pipe exploded, sending shrapnel into the torso area of 44 year old Paul Dasperson of Belvidere, Illinois. He died at the scene. The complaint says the victim’s wife made two videos on her phone of the incident. All three defendants face up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
