Traffic fatalities have taken a significant jump in the first two months of 2016. Data released by the state Department of Transportation shows 79 people have been killed in highway crashes through the first two months of the year. That’s 19 more than at this same time last year, or an increase of 32 percent. That includes 47 people who died in accidents in February, 11 of those in a single weekend…February 19th through the 21st. All told, 22 more people died last month than were killed in February of 2015. Locally, traffic fatalities are down to start the year. There have been no traffic deaths yet this year in Waupaca and Waushara counties. Winnebago County has seen two traffic fatalities, while Portage County has had one.
