State Veterans Affairs officials, along with a large contingent of area Vietnam War Veterans were on hand Tuesday morning at the Veteran’s Home in King to help commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. US involvement in Vietnam begain in the early 1950’s, and spanned six presidents…ending with the withdrawal of US troops in 1974.
Among those serving in Vietnam was King resident Dennis Kinney, who spoke during the morning’s ceremony. Kinney spent two years in Vietnam as a member of the US Air Force. Also addressing the ceremony was Air Force Veteran Dale Oatman of White Lake, who spent over a year on various air bases in South Vietnam. Oatman said the average age of American soldiers in Vietnam was 19, compared to 24 in World War II.
More than 58,000 Americans lost their lives fighting in Vietnam. The Veteran’s Home in King is home to more than 200 soldiers who served in that war.
