The Waupaca Area Fire Department has a new tool to help fight fires. The department has added a drone to its fire-fighting arsenal, thanks to a donation from two Waupaca area businesses… August Aerial Imagery and RE/MAX Lyons Real Estate. Waupaca Fire Chief Jerry Deuman says the drone will help the department in search and rescue operations, structural fires, and much more, enhancing the safety of fire-fighters. He says the drone can give incident commanders views of rooftops and the better night-time access to areas that may have structurally deficiencies. Safety officer Steve Fenske says five firefighters currently have some experience in piloting drones. He says they will be getting additional training and FAA certification. The 3000-dollar drone can operate at up to 40 miles per hour. The Waupaca Area Fire Department is the first unit in the county to use a drone in their operations.
