The Waupaca City Council is beginning discussions on the possibility of allowing ATV’s and UTV’s on some city streets. The topic made it to the agenda of last night’s common council meeting, 18 months after first being requested by a citizen. While not close to making any recommendation on the idea, Mayor Brian Smith says it is time to start considering ATV and UTV routes, especially since many surrounding townships have done so. Dozens of cities and towns around the state have recently approved such routes, including Rhinelander, Eagle River, Manitowoc, and Baldwin. Police Chief Brian Hoelzel, whose family enjoys riding ATV’s up north, says safety would be the key issue if the city were to allow them. Several council members expressed support for the idea, suggesting an increase in tourism if ATV and UTV routes through the city were designated.
