A Waupaca man faces felony charges in Waupaca Co. Circuit Court. Twenty-three-year-old Demerray J. Gilliam is charged with felony bail jumping and attempted strangulation and suffocation. According to the criminal complaint, a 911 call was made from the daughter of a rental property owner on Sunday afternoon in the Town of Lind, claiming a burglary was in progress. The caller saw Gilliam and two females. The complaint alleges Gilliam tried to get back into the house to retrieve his phone. When the rental property owner arrived, the caller unlocked the door to let him in when Gilliam tried to push his way into the house, and in the process, grabbed the caller’s arm and scratched her. The rental property owner pushed Gilliam away. Gilliam then grabbed the owner from behind, wrapped his arm around his neck and began to squeeze. If convicted on both felony charges, Gilliam could face up to nine years in prison. He makes his initial court appearance on July 24th.
