Waupaca city residents will get to sound off on the idea of opening the city for ATV and UTV use. Mayor Brian Smith last night tasked city attorney Tom Hart with drafting an ordinance to that effect, following a presentation on the issue from Gene Goode, a member of the Waupaca County Sheriff’s Department, and president of the Northeastern and Central Wisconsin ATV Association. Goode says all Waupaca County trunk highways are open for ATV and UTV’s, and the Towns of Farmington, Dayton, Lind, Fremont, Weyauwega, and Royalton have opened all their roadways as well. He suggests the city of Waupaca do the same, and then shut off certain areas to their use if and when any problems or concerns arise. Once an ordinance is drafted, a public hearing will be held, and two readings of the ordinance would be needed before final passage. Goode says ATV’s and UTV’s are already outpacing the number of snowmobiles in the state, and more and more communities are welcoming them on their roadways.
