A Weyauwega man is dead after drowning while trying to save a dog. The Waupaca County Sheriff’s Office says the 30 year old man went onto the ice of a pond on private property in the Town of Weyauwega shortly before 4 p.m. Wednesday after the dog went through the ice. A 9-1-1 call to the sheriff’s office at 3:52 said the man was in distress in the pond. Weyauwega Police and Fire personnel responded, as did sheriff’s deputies and ambulance personnel. The man was located in the pond at 4:10, and fire department workers got him to shore, where resuscitation efforts began. The man was taken to ThedaCare Hospital in Waupaca, where he was pronounced dead. The victim’s name has not been released. The dog got out of the pond prior to emergency personnel arriving at the scene.
