The Waupaca County Planning and Zoning committee Thursday approved a zoning change for land to be used for a sand mine in the Town of Union. The change from commercial to agricultural was made to land adjacent to property already permitted to be used for the mine. Under Wisconsin statutes, non-metallic mines are only permitted on property zoned agricultural. Gelhar Mining of Markasan is in the process of developing the mine on 160 acres off Dennison Road. The zoning change allows the company to move the business offices to the new property, and use the buildings that are there, that were previously owned by Dennison Supply Company. The Planning and Zoning committee also approved a corresponding amendment to the Town of Union’s comprehensive plan.
